stick

What makes grace stick?
Stick against the ribs,
like peanut butter coating the stomach,
oatmeal in the bosom;
what makes it stay and
last through each and into every day?
What mechanisms need be operated
what hurried or unhurried phrases to guarantee
or acts again-membered?

what words iterated
what water-shakers sprinkled
what breads broken and consumed
what
what
what will make grace stick?

Look how we stand here fragile, shaking
as if it was cold and not just our own unease;

Look how we wait here vulnerable, wondering
still unsure whether the answer will stick
when we hear, perhaps for the first time
it's been a long day, admit it, so long a day
it's hard to remember, hard to hold together
all passed by this way, all in this same long day.

  1. So long, the grace feels like a distant memory or perhaps a dream, one where it seemed so real, so alive, veryawake. This dream of grace. But it is so real... felt in the air we breathe, the life we live, alive or otherwise...feigning life, half dead so as not to fully grasp...grace. yes, we live out our brokenness when victorious life is waiting for the taking. While God heals and reminds us and remembers, we stagger and stand leaning against his staff of grace only to realize grace is pushing, no ,pulling us up from the fall, from the ground of our blindness. We can see but so often choose eyes to be closed squinting ,squeezing them shut refusing to face what isn't really there, but what is?...grace. uh huh. Open your eyes abre los ojos and see and taste...that the Lord is good, right? Yup.
